So how must you consume it? There are few ways you can include nutmeg in your diet. If you are a chai lover just add a bit of nutmeg along with milk, tea leaves and water. Nutmeg or Jaiphal trees produce fruits after 7 years of planting. It is often grown as a mixed crop with coconut and areca nut trees in western ghats region which is also a home to so many flora and fauna. This tree produces a fruit which resembles the shape of fresh apricot. Outer layer of nutmeg is covered by a husk, after opening the outer husk , nutmeg is covered by mace which is also a popular spice in Indian cuisine.
Harvesting nutmeg is a tedious task as the tree is usually covered by red ants. Failing to notice ants on the leaf will lead to hundreds of ants falling over the person trying to pluck the fruit. And this is going to be extremely painful, so harvesters carefully harvest nutmeg using a long bamboo stick with a sharp knife attached towards the end of it.
Once fruit is harvested, it is split open, mace is separated and nutmeg is made to dry and then once dried, hard shell covering nutmeg is cracked open. Though nutmeg has the name nut, it is actually a dried seed inside nutmeg fruit.
